In an article in The Times today, former foreign secretary Dominic Raab writes that gold has become the favoured currency of global organised crime with it flowing between Russian mercenaries in Southern Africa, drug cartels in Latin America and people traffickers in Peru.

There is a domestic market for gold between criminals in the UK as well, as evidenced by a seizure of 8kg of bullion in gold bars and coins worth around £500,000 that is being sold this week by Wilsons Auctions.

The gold was seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act and are being sold on behalf of a law enforcement agency.

A proportion of the gold’s sale price will be channelled back into crime busters in Britain.

It goes under the hammer in Wilsons Auctions’ latest monthly sale from November 27 to 29 where high-value assets, including a number of expensive Swiss made Rolex replica watches, are sold without reserve prices.
